A fan-made dedicated server for

Diablo & Hellfire

The labyrinth never sleeps. DevXH keeps your game open to the world — headless, on any VPS, over TCP/IP or ZeroTier.

  • 0window managers needed
  • ~2%CPU on an idle VPS
  • 3human players per game

The Project

What is DevXH?

DevXH is a custom port of DevilutionX — the open-source reimplementation of Diablo & Hellfire — that turns the game itself into a dedicated server.

The server boots straight into a hosted game with an idle host player, waits for adventurers, and never asks for a monitor. Deploy it on a VPS, point your friends at the address, and descend together.

It speaks the same multiplayer protocol as stock DevilutionX clients, so your players just connect with the game they already have.

Headless by Design

No X server, no Wayland, no WM. Runs on a $4 droplet.

TCP/IP & ZeroTier

Public internet games, or private LAN-style over ZeroTier.

Idle Host Player

The server holds a slot and idles in town until the game fills.

Client Compatible

Stock DevilutionX 1.5.x players join — no patch required.

Forged in the Furnace

Features

Truly Headless

Video subsystem skipped, signal handling built in, systemd-ready. SSH in, run it, walk away.

Featherweight

~2% CPU idle, a few MB of RAM. The whole game engine runs the lobby — efficiently.

Public Games

Hosts an open game anyone with the address can join. Optional password for private runs.

Idle Player Bot

The same binary can join another game and idle — an automated companion or test client.

ZeroTier Ready

Join a ZeroTier network, pass the network ID, and your server appears on a private VPN.

Public Gate Registry

Register your DevXH server on the forum and it appears in the live gates list below.

The Gates

Public Server List

Live gates from the network, updated as operators report in. Gates appear after a quick moderation pass.

From the Annals

The Lore

Beneath the ruined cathedral of Tristram, the labyrinth endured. Heroes descended, demons rose, and the Archstone of Sin — Na‑Krul's prison — was sealed by three mages whose names history has all but devoured.

Yet seals crack. In the age of DevilutionX the gates stand open again, and the faithful rebuilt the doors that were once shut: not with wards and runes, but with daemons and sockets. Where wizards once whispered incantations, administrators now whisper systemctl start devxh.

Each DevXH server is a gate into the labyrinth — a doorway held open in the dark, tended by a silent host who waits in town while heroes descend. The demons do not care how the door was opened. Only that it was.
